Farina 1709

Farina 1709 began in Cologne on 13 July 1709, when Johann Baptist Farina founded G.B. Farina; his younger brother Johann Maria joined in 1714. Johann Maria developed the formula for Eau de Cologne and, after his brother’s death, carried the business forward under his own name from 1733. In eighteenth-century Europe, Farina’s original Eau de Cologne drew documented royal and aristocratic customers and gave its name to an entire fragrance class. The brand unites Cologne and Italian roots with bergamot-led citrus perfumery, continuing to make its original Eau de Cologne to a protected family recipe. Sold to Roger & Gallet in 1975 and owned by Doetsch, Grether & Cie. from 1981, it is now family-owned. Its red tulip logo, introduced in 1924, remains its visual signature; the Farina House museum, opened in 2003, tells the company’s history and Eau de Cologne’s origins. The Original Eau de Cologne remains its defining fragrance, while the Farina Atelier translates the 1709 composition into participatory fragrance-making.
