FCUK
French Connection was founded in London in 1972 by Stephen Marks as a design-led clothing brand. FCUK, an abbreviation for French Connection United Kingdom, originated from an internal memo and was developed by advertising figure Trevor Beattie as the UK equivalent of FCHK, or French Connection Hong Kong. In spring 1997, the controversial “fcuk fashion” campaign brought the identity into public prominence, and the advertising idea subsequently became a brand with a deliberately subversive, anti-establishment tone. The campaign attracted 27 complaints to the UK Advertising Standards Authority; in 2004, French Connection announced a campaign that omitted the FCUK logo and name. The brand’s contemporary offer includes clothing, accessories and homeware, with an identity shaped by global community, street culture, individual creativity and digitally led campaigns. In 2021, French Connection was taken private through a recommended cash acquisition by MIP Holdings, whose scheme became effective on 8 November.
