Fer à Cheval
Fer à Cheval is a savonnerie located in Marseille’s Sainte-Marthe district, where it became dedicated to Marseille-soap production after its founding period. It received a gold medal for soap quality at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, and in 1953 the brand was formed through the combination of Huileries Antonin Roux and Savonnerie J.B. Paul. The Salvador group acquired the Marseille soapworks in 1974; for many years afterward, the site produced Marseille soap under the Le Chat brand. In 2003, the Compagnie des Détergents et du Savon de Marseille became the new owner of the brand’s activity. After the company entered judicial reorganization in 2012, the business was sold in 2013 to brothers Raphaël and Yannick Seghin through the Nouvelle Compagnie des Détergents et du Savon de Marseille. The takeover brought updated packaging and a logo, while emphasizing the savonnerie’s historical and industrial heritage alongside traditional Marseille-soap production. Fer à Cheval’s identity centers on Marseille soap made by traditional cauldron saponification. On 8 January 2019, parts of the savonnerie were inscribed as historic monuments as a living example of nineteenth-century Marseille soapmaking.
