Fragrance house
Filigree & Shadow
Founded in 2013 by James Elliott, Filigree & Shadow is a perfume house named after the Fever Tree song “Filigree and Shadow,” through a twice-borrowed reference. Elliott, identified as the brand’s proprietor and sole creative perfumer, began studying perfumery in 2011 and released the house’s first collection of natural perfumes in December 2015. Its first conventional fragrance followed in 2018, while the brand continued working with both natural and synthetic materials. Music informs its creative identity: Elliott describes himself as an olfactive synesthete, and the fragrances are largely inspired by music. The house rejects gender assignment in fragrance, presenting scent as personal expression and encouraging selection by fragrance family and individual response. Sui Generis exemplifies its experimental approach, offsetting a methamphetamine-inspired accord with bubblegum in a fragrance perfumed by Elliott. In 2020, the brand shifted to distilled water as its fragrance carrier because of difficulties shipping alcohol-based perfumes internationally. In July 2025, Elliott announced the brand’s relocation from Seattle to Brussels; the West Seattle studio and online shop closed permanently on September 30, 2025, as he prepared to re-establish Filigree & Shadow in Europe.
