Fragrance house

For Strange Women

For Strange Women was created in 2009 by Jill McKeever as a creative project alongside her work as a designer and photographer. Based in Kansas City, the business evolved from McKeever’s personal experiments with natural fragrances into a primarily online perfume brand and later a larger small-team operation. McKeever continues to own, formulate, and direct the company, whose identity centers on niche botanical perfume made with plant-derived aromatics. The scents are intended to evoke memories of natural landscapes and serve as sensory rituals, with an earthy, moody, comfort-focused style rooted in natural materials and nostalgic concepts. Its visual direction combines McKeever’s art direction with Ash Miyagawa’s design and illustration. Beginning in 2012, McKeever released a limited-edition perfume for every new moon; by 2025, she had created more than 100 unique perfumes in the series. In 2020, she published The Spirit of Botany, a book about aromatic botanical materials, her methods and rituals, and her experience building the brand. Winter Kitty originated in 2009 and is directly tied to the brand’s early history, drawing inspiration from felines, fireplaces, and snowflakes.
