Foster's
Foster’s Lager was first brewed in Melbourne by William and Ralph Foster, who had arrived from New York in 1886. Their brewery began operating in late 1888, and its first hotel shipment followed in February 1889. The brothers sold the brewery within about a year of its launch and returned to the United States; by 1907, it had been absorbed into the Carlton & United Breweries conglomerate. Foster’s developed its international identity through a 1971 UK launch and advertising that presented the beer as Australian, with Paul Hogan becoming a prominent figure in the brand’s 1980s campaigns. The brand’s public identity remains closely tied to Australia, although beer sold internationally has also been brewed outside the country under licensing arrangements. Since 1 June 2020, Foster’s has formed part of the Carlton & United Breweries business owned by Asahi Group Holdings. Its brand world also includes an official Foster’s Eau de Toilette, presented in a miniature beer-can replica with a green, spicy, aromatic and woody profile.
