Fueguia 1833
Fueguia 1833 was founded in Buenos Aires in 2010 by Argentine artist Julian Bedel, whose earlier work included painting, sculpture, music, and guitar-making. He developed the house as an empirical artistic exploration of scent, while its identity draws on South American history, art, music, nature, Patagonia, and indigenous communities associated with the region’s aromatic and medicinal plants. The name refers to Fueguia Basket, a native girl from Tierra del Fuego connected with Robert FitzRoy’s voyage and Charles Darwin’s Beagle expedition, reflecting on imperialism and indigenous history. Fueguia describes its approach as ethnobotanical perfumery, combining scientific research with artistic exploration; its vertically integrated model encompasses botanical research, formulation, production, packaging, and brand-controlled presentation. Its corporate identity evolved from an Argentine-founded house to one headquartered in Milan while retaining its Buenos Aires origin and South American cultural focus. In March 2021, Ilwaddi WLL made a growth-equity investment in Fueguia 1833. El Dorado, launched in 2010, was the house’s first signed accord and belongs to its Antropología collection. In 2023, Fueguia collaborated with Gabriela Hearst on Paysandú and New York, its first partnership with a fashion designer.
