Galanos
James Galanos established his own label, Galanos Originals, in Los Angeles in 1951, with its first line ordered by Saks Fifth Avenue’s Beverly Hills branch. Trained at Robert Piguet in Paris, he developed an American ready-to-wear house distinguished by couture-level construction, fine fabrics, embroidery, and streamlined detailing. Galanos became particularly associated with chiffon eveningwear and gowns worn by Nancy Reagan and other public figures, while earning major recognition through the Neiman Marcus Award, Coty Awards, the Coty Hall of Fame, and the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. He retired from fashion in 1998 and turned his attention to photography and other art, ending the label’s active designer-led era. In 2016, the James G. Galanos Foundation donated approximately 700 couture-level ensembles and related archival material to Drexel University, creating the James G. Galanos Archive.
