Geoffrey Beene
Geoffrey Beene opened Geoffrey Beene, Inc. on New York’s Seventh Avenue in 1963. His design approach reshaped clothing around the body through direct draping and unconventional construction rather than traditional shaping methods. In 1971, he introduced the Beene Bag collection, a sportier, less expensive line that extended this design language beyond the main collection. In 1976, Beene became the first American designer to show his collections in Milan, and the Fashion Institute of Technology’s 1992 retrospective and book, “Unbound,” marked his 30-year career. He bought out his business partner in 1981 and thereafter became independent. Beene died on September 28, 2004, while the brand’s posthumous identity continued to be associated with his individual, modernist approach to American fashion. On August 2, 2021, PVH completed the sale of the Geoffrey Beene trademarks and certain related assets to Authentic Brands Group. In fragrance, Grey Flannel launched in 1975 and won the Fragrance Foundation’s 1976 Fragrance of the Year award in the Men’s Prestige category.
