Georges Marciano
Georges Marciano traces its story to the apparel business that Georges Marciano and his brothers began in France in 1972. After opening their first U.S. stores in California in 1978, the brothers founded GUESS in 1981 around a fashion jean: the stone-washed, three-zip Marilyn jean. During GUESS’s early years, Georges Marciano was primarily responsible for design, while Maurice Marciano handled product development. Marciano’s design work included tight-fitting, zippered jeans softened through repeated washing, and in 1987 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art named him California’s Designer of the Year. GUESS later evolved from a denim company into a broader lifestyle brand, introducing its Marciano contemporary collection as a new company concept in 2004.
