ghd
Founded in 2001 by Martin Penny, Gary Douglas, and Robert Powls, ghd began when the trio acquired production and distribution rights to a hair straightener developed in South Korea and introduced it through British salons. Its name stands for “Good Hair Day.” The brand built its early identity around professional stylists and salon recommendation, expanded internationally from 2003 to 2007, and launched ghdhair.com during that period. In 2012, it added hairdryers, followed by curling tools in 2014, while developing thermal-manipulation research and styling technologies. Its public identity brings together professional hair styling, technology, beauty, and stylist-led expertise, alongside a stated purpose of empowering women to look and feel beautiful so they can fulfil their ambitions. Following a 2020 carve-out, ghd was positioned as a beauty-tech brand centered on innovation and research.
