Grès
Grès traces its origins to Madame Grès’s fashion maison, opened in 1932. In 1935, her silk-jersey dresses established a design language built on cutting fabric directly on the model and shaping it through sculptural draping, sometimes with as many as 300 folds; in 1942, she renamed the workshop Grès. The house’s creative identity is rooted in treating fabric as sculpture through draping and precisely controlled pleating. Madame Grès later extended the house beyond haute couture into prêt-à-porter and fragrance, including Cabochard and Cabotine. Launched in 1959, Cabochard temporarily made her fortune and was later described as having acquired cult status after its market debut. After the 1984 Tapie transaction, Esterel purchased the house in 1986, the fashion house was liquidated in 1987, and Japan’s Yagi Tsusho Limited owned it from 1988. Art & Fragrance, Lalique Group’s predecessor, acquired the brand in 2007; by 2017, Parfums Grès was managed within Lalique Group’s portfolio. Madame Grès and Pièce Unique followed in 2013 and 2015 as tributes to her work and couture concepts.
