Guess
Founded in Los Angeles in 1981 by the four Marciano brothers from southern France, Guess began with a distinctly transatlantic point of view. Its first major product was the slim-fitting, stonewashed three-zip Marilyn jean; Bloomingdale’s ordered 24 pairs, which sold out within hours. Guess subsequently evolved from a denim label into a lifestyle brand combining European influence, California-casual styling, and image-driven advertising. Paul Marciano shaped its creative identity through campaigns drawing on classic Hollywood imagery and contemporary women, establishing the recurring Guess Girl concept. Around 1983, Guess sold a stake to the Nakash brothers of Jordache, but a prolonged legal dispute ended with a 1990 settlement restoring full ownership to the Marcianos. The company debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996. In fragrance, Guess Seductive, introduced in 2010 as a floral-fruity women’s scent, developed into a defining Guess fragrance family and a pillar of its fragrance business.
