Hang Ten

Hang Ten was founded in 1960 by Doris Moore and Duke Boyd in Seal Beach, California, beginning with surfwear such as board shorts designed for ocean use and taking its name from the surfing maneuver “Hang Ten.” Its two-foot logo became a trademark used on early products and advertising, while the brand sponsored surf events and helped establish competitions that brought young surfers to magazines and television. Hang Ten expanded from surfing apparel into a broader California lifestyle and action-sports identity, with activity extending to motocross, skateboarding, skiing, paragliding, sailing, marathon running, and tennis. Its public identity is presented as an original surf and California lifestyle brand rooted in West Coast surf culture. In December 2011, Perfect Lead Investments, a wholly owned subsidiary of Li & Fung (Retailing) Limited, announced an offer to acquire Hang Ten Group; the offer became unconditional on 2 February 2012, closed on 16 February, and the group’s stock listing was withdrawn in March.
