Hannah Montana began as a Disney Channel series that premiered on March 24, 2006, introducing a fictional pop-star alter ego for teenager Miley Stewart, played by Miley Cyrus. The property originated within Disney Channel and was treated by The Walt Disney Company as a cross-platform Disney franchise. Its identity rested on the contrast between Miley’s ordinary school life and Hannah’s public life as a singer, expressed through a secret identity and stage costuming. Cyrus shaped that identity directly by portraying both sides of the character and performing the associated music; she also became a major recording artist through the role.
