Hawaiian Tropic

Hawaiian Tropic was founded in 1969 by Ron Rice, who developed and initially sold his suntan-lotion formula around Daytona Beach, Florida. Rice began the business by experimenting in his garage with oils including coconut oil; the original product was first called Tropic Tan before taking the Hawaiian Tropic name. Its early public identity paired suntan products with lifestyle marketing, notably the Miss Hawaiian Tropic beauty pageant, launched in 1983. Ownership changed in April 2007, when Playtex Products acquired the sun-care business from Tiki Hut Holding Company. Energizer Holdings acquired Playtex that same year, and after Energizer became Edgewell Personal Care on July 1, 2015, Hawaiian Tropic remained in Edgewell’s personal-care portfolio. The brand’s stated focus includes sun care, skin protection, and hydration. It is particularly associated with the coconut-scented aroma of its suntan lotion, a lasting cultural link with the beach and summer.
