Helena Rubinstein
Helena Rubinstein established her first beauty salon in Melbourne in 1902, selling Crème Valaze. The business expanded from Australia to London in 1908, Paris in 1909, and New York in 1916. Rubinstein’s work linked beauty with scientific skin treatment, cosmetics innovation, modern art, and women’s self-determination. She sold the American business in 1928 and bought it back after the Wall Street crash sharply reduced its share price. L’Oréal acquired Helena Rubinstein’s Latin American and Japanese operations in 1983 and completed the worldwide acquisition in 1988. Today, the brand’s public identity centers on avant-garde skincare and Cellular Skin Science, combining scientific precision with sensory formulations and partnerships with scientific experts. In 2012, a partnership with INSERM research director Jean-Marc Lemaitre explored active cellular reprogramming and informed the development of the Prodigy Cellglow range. Fragrance remains secondary to the skincare identity, though Heaven Sent, launched in 1941, is identified as one of Rubinstein’s famous fragrances.
