Herbal Essences

Herbal Essences launched in 1971 as Herbal Essence, originally a single shampoo associated with Clairol. From its early identity, the brand connected hair washing with nature, botanical ingredients, and sensory experience; its 1990s “totally organic experiences” advertising helped make that positioning culturally prominent. Ownership changed when Bristol-Myers Squibb sold its Clairol beauty-care business, including Herbal Essences, to Procter & Gamble on November 15, 2001, and P&G currently lists the brand in its global Hair Care portfolio. In 2017, Herbal Essences introduced bio:renew, combining nature with scientific expertise while continuing its emphasis on botanicals and fragrance. In 2019, it partnered with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to authenticate and identify botanicals in pure:renew products, alongside a continuing focus on real botanicals, plant science, conservation, and sustainability. Herbal Essences also added tactile symbols to its bottles in 2020 to support people with low or no vision. Its fragrance history includes the original green-herbaceous, white-floral, balsamic-musky shampoo scent and a 1995 formula whose lingering design helped create a memorable shower experience.
