House of Matriarch
House of Matriarch began in Bellevue in 2009, when Christi Meshell launched her first perfume, Matriarch. The brand developed from Meshell’s earlier work making custom candles for magical and ritual purposes, as she shifted toward composing perfumes from natural essences. Based in the Seattle area, it is an independent fragrance house centered on natural and artisan perfumery, with unisex fragrances and a connection to older perfume-making traditions. Its creative language draws on magic, alchemy, smoke, memory, nature, and layered scent storytelling. Meshell, the founder, creative director, and fragrance composer, develops concepts from inspiration and ingredient selection through blending and final presentation. Brand strategist and designer Tim Girvin helped shape the house’s visual system and messaging, translating Meshell’s spiritual, scent-based, and artistic ideas into a unified expression. In 2013, Meshell received the title Top Artisan Perfumer at the International Fragrance Awards, while House of Matriarch was named Top Indie Fragrance House by Cafleurebon. Blackbird, later presented as Black No. 1, was the house’s first cult classic, with its breakthrough in fragrance-circle sniff tests dated to 2012. Albatross is another popular fragrance, built around an ocean-meets-sky concept.
