Issey Miyake

Issey Miyake established Miyake Design Studio in April 1970, and the studio became the creative foundation of the house. Issey Miyake International Inc., the first ISSEY MIYAKE company, followed in November 1971; the house presented its first overseas collection in New York that year, began showing in Paris in 1973, and opened its first Paris store in 1975. Its creative identity explores the relationship between the body, fabric, and the space between them through the “a Piece of Cloth” concept, combining material research, technology, traditional techniques, and teamwork. That inquiry extended into PLEATS PLEASE ISSEY MIYAKE, begun as an independent brand in 1994, and into A-POC and 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE, launched in 2000 and 2010 respectively. Satoshi Kondo became designer of the ISSEY MIYAKE line from Spring/Summer 2020. After Miyake’s death in 2022, staff members who inherited his work continued the studio’s spirit through new challenges. The house’s fragrance legacy begins with L’Eau d’Issey, its first fragrance, launched in March 1992; it became an emblematic fragrance of the 1990s and an immense success, with a creation centered on water and nature.
