J. Crew
J. Crew traces its roots to 1947, when Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles founded Popular Merchandise Inc.; renamed J.Crew in 1983, it repositioned as a preppy catalog retailer. Its design vocabulary combined elevated classics, color, and rugby stripes. In 1989, the company opened its first flagship at New York’s South Street Seaport. Jenna Lyons joined in 1990 and spent 26 years with J.Crew, helping elevate it from a faltering catalog brand into an American fashion company and becoming its public-facing creative leader. J.Crew completed an initial public offering on July 3, 2006, marking a transition to public ownership. On March 7, 2011, affiliates of TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners completed the acquisition of J.Crew, and the company’s common stock was delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.
