J.F. Schwarzlose
J.F. Schwarzlose began in Berlin in 1856, when piano maker Joachim Friedrich Schwarzlose founded a drug and colonial-goods store that operated as J.F. Schwarzlose Söhne near Gendarmenmarkt. By 1875, the business had expanded into fine perfumes and other cosmetics, and in 1869 the Schwarzlose family had acquired the title of Royal Purveyor. After the historical company ceased operations in 1976, J.F. Schwarzlose Berlin was revived in 2012 by Lutz Herrmann, Tamas Tagscherer, and perfumer Véronique Nyberg. The modern brand connects historical Schwarzlose references with contemporary Berlin, combining modern interpretations of historical creations with new Berlin-inspired scents. Its fragrance legacy is especially associated with IA-33, named after the vehicle-registration sequence of the Berlin-Moabit production location in the 1917 era and created in connection with the period’s automobile-oriented woman. Stadtmuseum Berlin later described IA-33 as a famous Berlin Schwarzlose perfume and presented its reconstruction in a 2015–2016 exhibition on the city’s 1920s perfume culture.
