J Peterman

J Peterman’s first official catalog launched in 1988, pairing artist-rendered products with literary, story-like descriptions rather than conventional product photography. Its identity developed around travel, historical and vintage-inspired clothing, artist renderings, and elaborate narrative copy shaped by John Peterman’s travels and the writers of the Lost Generation. Beginning in 1995, the brand’s association with Seinfeld brought wide recognition; the show’s fictionalized Peterman was played by John O’Hurley, who later invested in the company’s 2001 relaunch. That revival followed a Chapter 11 filing on January 25, 1999, and a purchase by Paul Harris Stores, after which John Peterman said he was no longer associated with the company. When Paul Harris later entered bankruptcy, Peterman regained the name and relaunched with Scott Bernstein and former company personnel. In 2019, successor entity JP Outfitters was formed to acquire assets formerly owned by The J. Peterman Company. On December 31, 2022, it became JP Outfitters, Inc., identified as wholly owned by Hong Kong-based Santai Global Asset Management Ltd.
