Jar Parfums

Jar Parfums is the fragrance arm of Joel A. Rosenthal’s Paris-based JAR house, which he opened on Place Vendôme in 1978. Rosenthal moved from New York to Paris after graduating from Harvard in 1966 and developed JAR with Pierre Jeannet. The house’s creative identity is rooted in Rosenthal’s one-of-a-kind jewelry, nature-derived forms, close-set pavé work, and painterly gradations of gemstone color; perfume extends that approach into scent. JAR expanded into fragrance during the 1980s, presenting it through its Paris boutique and a second point of sale at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan. Golconda, dated to 1988, is identified as JAR’s first fragrance and is associated with Rosenthal’s authorship. The wider JAR house reached public milestones with a 2002 exhibition at Somerset House in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Jewels by JAR, held from November 20, 2013, to March 9, 2014, as the first American retrospective of Rosenthal’s work.
