Jean-Louis Scherrer

Jean-Louis Scherrer founded his own couture house in Paris in 1962 after working at Dior, with Yves Saint Laurent, and for Louis Féraud. In 1971, the house opened a boutique at 51 avenue Montaigne, received the haute couture designation, and expanded into ready-to-wear. Its visual codes included leopard patterns, polka dots, softened shoulders, and a compressed waist, with its graphic style linked to Scherrer’s interest in the Bauhaus era. The house expanded into Japan in the late 1970s, and Scherrer received Parisian haute couture’s Dé d’or in 1980 for the Russe collection. Its first fragrance appeared in 1979, followed by Scherrer 2 and Nuits Indiennes; the original Jean-Louis Scherrer perfume became a bestselling signature and an enduring reference for the brand. After financial difficulties and the end of its remaining boutiques and haute couture activity by 2008, JSB International acquired the brand in October 2011 and has owned it since. The post-2007 identity is couture ready-to-wear supported by licensing, while fragrance rights were handled separately from the fashion-brand transaction.
