Jenni Rivera
Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Jenni Rivera launched her music career in 1992. Initially recording corridos, she faced resistance in the male-dominated regional Mexican market before signing with Fonovisa in 1999; early momentum came with Que Me Entierren con La Banda, which included Las Malandrinas. Her public creative identity centered on bilingual, bicultural regional Mexican music and an outspoken female perspective, with songs drawn from her life and presented with unusual candor. Beyond recording, Rivera expanded into television, radio, clothing, cosmetics, film, production, and philanthropy while maintaining her identity as a singer-songwriter and businesswoman. The 2008 album Jenni became her first No. 1 debut on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. La Gran Señora, released in 2009, and the paired pop and banda albums Joyas Prestadas, released in 2011, documented a musical evolution. After Rivera’s death in 2012, her estate was initially led by her sister Rosie Rivera; by 2024, control had been handed to her daughter Jacqie Rivera. The estate’s posthumous program included Misión Cumplida, released in 2023 with original recordings discovered by Rivera’s youngest child, Johnny.
