Jockey International

Jockey International traces its origins to S.T. Cooper & Sons, founded by Samuel Thrall Cooper in St. Joseph, Michigan, in 1876 as a hosiery business serving lumberjacks with wool socks. After moving into men’s underwear in the late 1890s, the company incorporated as Cooper Underwear Company in 1900 and developed the Kenosha Klosed Krotch union suit in 1912. Arthur Kneibler’s 1934 design became the Jockey brief; Cooper’s began selling it at scale in 1935, when Marshall Field & Company sold out its initial 600 packages by noon and later sold 12,000 more. The Y-Front brief followed that year. Jockey’s evolution also included a 1938 underwear fashion show, the 1958 Skants briefs, the 1976 Elance collection, and Jockey for Her in 1982. The company adopted the Jockey name through renamings in 1971 and 1972. In 2026, the family-owned innerwear and apparel brand marked its 150th anniversary and was active in more than 120 countries, with a public identity centered on satisfying the human need for comfort.
