John Varvatos

John Varvatos founded his eponymous brand in 1999 after working in menswear design at Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren. Its first collection launched in 2000 with tailored clothing and sportswear, while rock-and-roll fashion and music became a defining part of the label’s identity. John Varvatos Enterprises entered VF Corporation’s portfolio in 2003 through VF’s acquisition of Nautica. The brand filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in May 2020, and Varvatos left the namesake label during the subsequent reorganization. Afterward, its public creative direction broadened beyond its earlier rock-focused positioning while retaining rock-and-roll influence as a core reference. Fragrance became part of the house’s story in 2004, when it launched its first scent through a fragrance license originally held by Zirh, with a composition by Rodrigo Flores-Roux. Built around a black-leather theme, the original John Varvatos fragrance is a defining example of the brand’s fragrance identity.
