Jones New York traces its founding to 1970, when Sidney Kimmel established the company, and was incorporated as Jones Apparel Group in 1975 after its apparel division was spun off to Kimmel and Gerard Rubin. Built around American women’s apparel, the brand offered suits, dresses, sportswear, and careerwear intended to provide a designer-like appearance at more accessible prices. Rena Rowan was an important creative figure in its early development: she joined Kimmel in the women’s clothing division, became associated with the Jones New York line, and later had a label launched under her name. During the 1980s, the company became one of the fastest-growing U.S. apparel businesses, then came close to bankruptcy in 1987 after heavy debt and unsuccessful acquisitions before returning to profitability following restructuring. In 2015, Authentic Brands Group purchased Jones New York from the Sycamore Partners-owned portfolio. The JONES NEW YORK SIGNATURE mark covered clothing as well as perfume and personal-care products, and its fragrance offering expanded in 2020 with Peony & Amberwood and Violet Blossom & Sandalwood.
