Joseph

JOSEPH was founded in 1966 by Casablanca-born Joseph Ettedgui. In 1969, Ettedgui opened Salon 33 on London’s King’s Road, initially selling Kenzo knitwear; in the early 1970s, the salon became a JOSEPH boutique, while an independent account dates his own-name Chelsea clothing store to 1972. The business developed as a concept-led retailer that selected contemporary and emerging designers, including Kenzo Takada, Azzedine Alaïa, Yohji Yamamoto, Margaret Howell, Katharine Hamnett and John Galliano. JOSEPH’s own label began as JOSEPH TRICOT in 1983 and developed into ready-to-wear centered on contemporary wardrobe essentials before taking the JOSEPH name. Ettedgui opened a design studio in Paris in 1993, later expanding it to include an atelier. In May 2005, Onward Kashiyama acquired the entire Joseph business. In 2024, Mario Arena joined as creative director, with Spring/Summer 2026 identified as his first collection. Alongside its curated contemporary fashion offer, the label emphasizes quality, fit, craftsmanship and a wardrobe of essentials. Its fragrance history includes Parfum de Jour, also listed as Joseph de Jour, released in 1997 and blended exclusively for JOSEPH by Penhaligon’s.
