Fragrance house
Joya
Joya was officially founded in Brooklyn in 2006 by Frederick Bouchardy, after a 2004 candle commission and prototype work. It began with a small collection of miniature candles and expanded into perfumes, soaps, diffusers, and other scented objects. Bouchardy conceived Joya as an overarching design and American heritage brand, with a creative model that translates the identities and stories of designers, artists, fashion and lifestyle companies, and cultural institutions into scent. Rayda Vega, a freelance perfumer and long-term collaborator, worked with Bouchardy on Joya’s first four perfumes. Foxglove, developed with Vega and released in 2014, was an ode to New York City. In February 2016, Joya opened a flagship in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill combining a fragrance studio, design collective, retail area, and public-facing cultural programming. In 2025–2026, its collaboration with the Brooklyn Museum for Monet and Venice brought this creative identity into a multisensory installation, with fragrances later issued as perfumed paper. Today, Joya presents itself as a modern fragrance house centered on personal fragrance, candles, perfumed paper, and collaborations with artists and cultural partners.
