Fragrance house
Juniper Ridge
Founded in 1998 by Hall Newbegin, Juniper Ridge began with small-batch, sustainably harvested products sold at the Berkeley Farmers’ Market. The brand developed from Newbegin’s interest in sharing the fragrances of plants and trees he encountered while backpacking in the western United States, becoming a West Coast home and body care company. Its creative identity centers on translating specific wilderness places into fragrance through sustainably harvested botanical materials and steam distillation rather than synthetic perfumes. Obi Kaufmann materially shaped that identity through packaging design, branding, and the foraging of aromatic plants and bark. The Field Lab project established a fragrance format built around aromatic studies of particular places and moments, with changing formulations documented from 2016 through 2023; Winter Redwood, made with materials gathered around Mount Tamalpais, is one example. After Newbegin died on June 3, 2020, the team continued his work. Juniper Ridge currently describes itself as family-owned and based in Oakland, California.
