Fragrance house
Kate Walsh
Kate Walsh founded Boyfriend after a breakup, drawing on the memory of a former boyfriend’s scent to create a fragrance intended to evoke that feeling whether or not someone was in a relationship. She chose to build the company herself rather than enter a standard licensing arrangement, participating directly in fragrance, packaging, and marketing decisions. Boyfriend launched commercially through HSN in November 2010, when Boyfriend LLC was described as owned by Walsh. Its original fragrance, created with Givaudan and perfumer Marypierre Julien, combined woody and amber aspects traditionally associated with masculine scents with floral elements, creating a gender-blurring scent identity. The launch brought an early commercial milestone: the fragrance train case sold out on its first day, while additional Boyfriend products sold out the following day. After a pause, Boyfriend returned in 2018 as a direct-to-consumer brand through a partnership with Digital Media Management. It is the defining fragrance associated with Walsh, with a core profile built around dark plum, myrrh, jasmine, amber, and vanilla.
