Kimora Lee Simmons

Kimora Lee Simmons launched Baby Phat in 1999 as a womenswear extension of Russell Simmons’s Phat Fashions line. Under her creative direction, the label developed a feminine interpretation of hip-hop-influenced streetwear, including fitted clothing and a cat silhouette logo. Baby Phat also expanded beyond apparel into fragrance as part of its wider lifestyle-brand development, while Simmons introduced her eponymous KLS Kimora Lee Simmons ready-to-wear label in late 2014 for the Pre-Fall 2015 season. Kellwood Company acquired Phat Fashions and Phat Licensing in February 2004, including Baby Phat, and Simmons remained responsible for Baby Phat’s creative direction after the transaction. The brand ceased operations in 2010 after her departure. Simmons reacquired Baby Phat in 2019 from an anonymous seller and announced its relaunch as a family creative project with her daughters Ming and Aoki Lee Simmons.
