Kuumba Made
Founded in 1980 by Denise “Kuumba” Piazza, Kuumba Made began with coconut oil infused with botanicals from her garden. After first showcasing its products at Boston’s Whole Health Expo in 1982, the brand launched through Bread & Circus in Boston in 1985 and later moved to Tucson, Arizona, in 1993, where the Sonoran Desert influenced its botanical formulations and connection to herbal traditions. Its identity brings together botanical knowledge, traditional plant remedies, natural ingredients, and science, while “Kuumba” is associated with creativity and making things more beautiful. Kuumba Made remains owned, operated, and guided by Piazza. In 2008, her study of Madagascar’s ecosystems, distilleries, and essential oils led to the Wellness Aromatherapy collection, including Breathe and Relieve. More recently, the brand announced a complete rebrand of its Body Oils and Desert Offerings collection, with refreshed packaging. Persian Garden, a floral fragrance evoking warm florals, ocean air, and light amber, is presented as one of Kuumba Made’s best-selling fragrance oils.
