La Mer
La Mer traces its origins to Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace physicist who, after suffering burns in a laboratory accident, spent 12 years and more than 6,000 experiments developing a kelp-based bio-fermentation process known as Miracle Broth. Huber began presenting and selling Crème de la Mer in 1965. After his death in 1991, his daughter Marley retained the family’s formula knowledge before selling the brand in 1995. The Estée Lauder Companies acquired La Mer in May that year, and the brand remains part of its portfolio. Following the acquisition, the original formula was rebuilt and La Mer expanded from its initial cream into a broader luxury skincare business. Its identity continues to center on the sea, Giant Sea Kelp, fermentation, and Miracle Broth, guided by the principles “Science. Craftsmanship. Renewal.” In 2015, La Mer introduced Crystal Miracle Broth as the active at the center of its Genaissance collection.
