Lambretta
Lambretta’s Milan-origin identity is tied to the Innocenti business, which expanded beyond scooters through a 1959 agreement with the British Motor Corporation and produced automobiles including the Austin A40 and later the Mini under the Innocenti name. In the 1960s, the scooter became associated with British Mod culture as part of the movement’s wardrobe and countercultural identity. In 1972, the Government of India purchased Innocenti’s machinery, know-how, and Lambretta trademark rights for Scooters India Limited; the original business was split, with its automotive division sold to British Leyland, while Lambretta continued through Indian production and licensing. In 2017, Lambretta GmbH was announced as a joint venture between Innocenti SA and the Austrian KSR Group. Lambretta’s official website identifies Innocenti SA as the trademark owner and presents the brand across clothing, watches, eyewear, jewellery, and perfume. A Delhi High Court judgment, however, records trademark-rights transactions involving August Ventures and Scooters India in 2022 while directing further proceedings involving August Ventures and Innocenti SA.
