Layrite
Layrite traces its origin to 1999, when barber Donnie Hawley opened Hawleywood’s Barber Shop and began developing a water-soluble alternative to petroleum-based pomades that were difficult to rinse out. The name came from a customer’s comment that the product made his hair “lay right.” Shaped by Hawley’s work in rockabilly and traditional-barbering circles, the early product was designed for classic cuts while still washing out with water. Its foundational proposition was a pomade that held like wax and washed out like gel, reflecting an identity rooted in traditional barbershop culture and grooming products made by barbers for barbers. Hawley promoted and demonstrated the product at punk-rock and rockabilly shows and music festivals, where it developed a following. Layrite LLC is the recorded owner of the LAYRITE DELUXE mark, covering hair pomades and aftershave products.
