Lee Cooper Originals
Tracing its origins to 1908, Lee Cooper grew from workwear, converting production to military uniforms during the First World War and to battle uniforms and denim fatigues during the Second. After the war, Harold Cooper redirected the business toward jeans and established the Lee Cooper name. His introduction of front-zip jeans for women in the 1950s initially caused controversy before being adopted by other manufacturers. The brand’s public identity developed through denim, youth fashion, and music, including work with the Rolling Stones, UB40, Serge Gainsbourg, Rod Stewart, and Jane Birkin; a Rolling Stones sponsorship in the 1980s helped carry Lee Cooper internationally. It marked its centenary in 2008 by supplying denim jackets and suits for more than 1,200 British Olympic and Paralympic team members at the Beijing opening ceremony. Ownership changed after Matalan acquired the brand in 2001 and sold its jeanswear business in 2005; in 2021, Iconix completed the sale of Lee Cooper China Limited and related trademarks across several Chinese markets. Lee Cooper entered fragrance through a Groupe Jacques Bogart license announced in 2009, with releases including Gentlemen, Ladies, RDLC, and London Spirit between 2010 and 2014.
