Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly Pulitzer’s namesake apparel company began in 1959, after Lilly Pulitzer moved to Palm Beach, Florida, opened a juice stand, and created a colorful shift dress to conceal citrus stains. That dress formed the basis of the brand’s resort-wear identity, pairing Palm Beach lifestyle references with vivid colors and prints. Key West Hand Print Fabrics helped shape the early visual language by supplying printed fabrics from 1962 to 1985, while Jacqueline Kennedy’s appearance in a Lilly dress on the cover of Life helped propel the label into national fashion prominence. Pulitzer closed the original operation in 1984. Scott Beaumont and James Bradbeer Jr. acquired the Lilly Pulitzer trademark rights in 1993 and relaunched the brand as a new company the following year. Oxford Industries acquired its parent company, Sugartown Worldwide, in 2010. Today, the brand continues to be identified with colorful prints, the shift silhouette, and Palm Beach resort-wear heritage, including through an archive initiative that reuses hand-painted prints first introduced between 1962 and 1985.
