Liz Claiborne

Liz Claiborne was established in 1976 by designer Liz Claiborne, Arthur Ortenberg, Leonard Boxer, and Jerome Chazen to provide comfortable professional clothing for working women. Its early identity emphasized fit, color, comfort, value, and mix-and-match versatility. The brand entered fragrance in the 1980s, launching a signature scent in 1986 as a joint venture with Avon Products; contemporary coverage positioned it as an extension of an active, confident, straightforward identity rather than a glamorous or exclusive image. In October 2009, Liz Claiborne, Inc. made J.C. Penney the exclusive U.S. and Puerto Rico department-store destination for Liz Claiborne and Claiborne merchandise. After the namesake brand was sold, the former company announced in January 2012 that it would change its corporate name to Fifth & Pacific Companies. On January 8, 2025, Liz Claiborne was included among J.C. Penney’s exclusive private brands within Catalyst Brands, formed through the combination of J.C. Penney and SPARC Group.
