Loewe
Loewe began in Madrid in 1846 as a collective of Spanish leather artisans. In 1872, German leather craftsman Enrique Loewe Roessberg acquired the workshop and gave it his name, establishing the house’s enduring association with Spanish leather craftsmanship. Loewe became an official supplier to the Spanish Royal Crown in 1905, introduced women’s ready-to-wear in 1960, and launched men’s ready-to-wear in 1983. Its four-L Anagram motif was created in 1970 by designer Vicente Vela. Louis Vuitton became a shareholder in 1985, and LVMH acquired Loewe in 1996. The house established the Loewe Foundation in 1988 to support creativity, education, and heritage across craft and the arts, later creating the annual Loewe Craft Prize in 2016. Jonathan Anderson became creative director in 2013 and, with M/M (Paris), introduced a new brand identity in 2014 while reshaping Loewe’s fashion and cultural direction. The Puzzle bag followed in 2015. Loewe entered fragrance in 1972 with L de Loewe and relaunched its perfume collection as Botanical Rainbow in 2020.
