Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton began in 1854, when Louis Vuitton opened his first store at 4 Rue Neuve-des-Capucines near Place Vendôme as a maker of travel trunks. The House developed its identity through innovations including lightweight, stackable flat-topped trunks, the Damier canvas introduced in 1888, and the Monogram canvas created by Georges Vuitton in 1896 in tribute to his father. It expanded from trunk-making into a broader luxury house while retaining travel and craftsmanship as identity themes. In 1987, Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy to create LVMH. In 1997, it appointed Marc Jacobs to expand into ready-to-wear and accessories; during his tenure, collaborations with Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami, and Richard Prince materially shaped the House’s creative identity. Virgil Abloh brought streetwear influences to the men’s collections from 2018, while Pharrell Williams brought a contemporary direction to them in 2023. In fragrance, Louis Vuitton launched Heures d’Absence in 1927 and returned to perfume in 2016 with Les Parfums Louis Vuitton, a seven-fragrance women’s collection created by Jacques Cavallier Belletrud.
