Luciano Pavarotti
Born in Modena, Italy, on October 12, 1935, Luciano Pavarotti began serious vocal study in 1954 with Arrigo Pola. After debuts at the Vienna State Opera and London’s Royal Opera House in 1963, his international operatic career expanded rapidly. Television, open-air concerts, stadium performances, and cross-genre collaborations broadened his public identity from elite opera tenor to mass-audience cultural figure. The 1990 Three Tenors concert with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras, held before the World Cup final, broadened his worldwide audience, while his performance of Nessun Dorma became associated with BBC tournament coverage. In 1992, he launched the Pavarotti International equestrian event and created Pavarotti & Friends, a cross-genre concert project supporting charitable causes. His fragrance line began in 1994 with a men’s perfume conceived by Pavarotti and produced by Eurocosmesi; Pavarotti Donna followed in 1995, and Luciano appeared in 1999. The original men’s fragrance, classified as a woody chypre, is the line’s clearest documented defining example. Pavarotti died in Modena on September 6, 2007. Since 2008, the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation has preserved his artistic memory, supported young opera singers, and managed his former residence as a museum; in 2025, it organized Pavarotti 90 events.
