Madeleine Mono
Madeleine Mono was an English former theater performer who arrived in New York in 1974 and built a cosmetics business around her own dramatic eye-makeup style. Her first major product, Indian Eyes, was an eyeliner made from a black carbon base and oils, introduced at Henri Bendel’s in Manhattan. The brand expanded to cosmetic counters at Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Lord & Taylor, while its public identity remained primarily cosmetics-led across eye makeup, blushes, lipsticks, shadows, and perfumes. After the company filed for Chapter 11 in 1985, its cosmetics line was repositioned toward the semi-mass market, with its two perfumes retained as exceptions. Madeleine de Madeleine, introduced in 1978, became the brand’s signature fragrance: a white floral centered on orange blossom and tuberose that inspired long-term loyalty among wearers. In 2013, thirty-five years later, the brand launched Mischief, developed by perfumer Hugh Spencer of Spenarome. Irma Shorell, Inc. owns the MADELEINE MONO MISCHIEF mark, and current storefront presentation places Madeleine Mono perfumes alongside Irma Shorell Skin Beauty offerings.
