Maison Dorin traces its uncertain origins to Fards Rouges et Blancs, a Parisian beauty-products shop acquired by Marguerite Brunet, known as Mademoiselle Montansier, in the second half of the 18th century. In 1780, Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI appointed the Maison supplier to the Court of Versailles for powders and makeup. Following a partnership with Montansier, Jean-Marie Dorin acquired the Maison and gave it his name in 1819. Its early identity was closely tied to theatre and stage makeup, and after the Revolution it supplied Parisian theatre companies. Under Hector Monin, who became director in 1884, Dorin developed a European and international presence, while its products received a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition and later exhibition awards. After declining following the Second World War, the Maison stopped its own activity in the 1980s. France Excellence acquired Dorin in 1998 and undertook to revive its heritage; the transaction was associated with owner Bashar Nasri. Its fragrance legacy includes Un Air de Paris, launched in 1886 and described as the Maison’s iconic fragrance, while The Scents of Versailles is a five-fragrance collection inspired by its history and relationship with Versailles.
