Maja

Maja was created in 1918 by Esteve Monegal, founder of the Barcelona-based Spanish perfume company Myrurgia, which had been established in Barcelona by the Monegal family in 1916. Its early identity was shaped by the dancer Tórtola Valencia, whose image and Spanish character informed the brand’s presentation. Maja’s aesthetic draws on Spanish beauty and fine-perfumery inspiration across fragrances and related personal-care products. The signature Maja fragrance was introduced in 1918 and reintroduced in 1945; museum documentation identifies it as Myrurgia’s best-known product and fragrance. In 2011, Grupo Grisi purchased the brand from Puig, marking its transition from Spanish Puig ownership to Mexican ownership. Maja’s current presentation emphasizes more than a century of history and Maja Clásica as its continuing classic expression, associated with the Manila shawl aesthetic. At the end of 2024, the brand announced three new fragrances—Lucky, Happy, and Romantic—as part of a creative refresh.
