Mami Wata

Mami Wata is a Cape Town-based African surf apparel and lifestyle brand, conceived by South Africans Andy Davis, Nick Dutton and Peet Pienaar after a 2015 conversation about the lack of a distinctly South African surf brand and launched in Cape Town in 2017. Its identity draws on African surf culture, local design influences and African production, while supporting surf therapy and an approach linking surfing with local economic and community development. The brand’s AFROSURF project documented African surfing and related street culture across 18 coastal countries, with royalties committed to Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children. In 2023, a global Vans Surf collaboration brought its African surf-culture narrative and graphic design language to an international audience. Mami Wata’s first fragrance, Neo-Animism, was developed with Etienne de Swardt and Mathilde Bijaoui. Part of the Luck Is Alive range, it connects African ocean minerals with the green bar soap associated with everyday life in Southern Africa and is informed by animism.
