Mandarina Duck
Founded in Bologna in 1977 by Paolo Trento and Pietro Mannato, Mandarina Duck began with a clear proposition for bags: intelligent, functional, lightweight and colorful. Its identity developed around movement, travel, functionality, color, irony and imagination, while the mandarin duck inspired both its name and its icon through associations with colorful plumage, water resistance and migratory travel. The 1977 Utility collection established an early design language of technical materials, lightness, resistance, water repellency and recognizable color; in 1981, the Tank line made protective construction visible through rubber profiles and textured surfaces. In 2001, Marcel Wanders designed the Murano Bag, whose layered materials and forming process drew on Murano glassblowing. In 2006, a collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto produced Y’s Mandarina, joining the brand’s bag, travel and accessories expertise with Yamamoto’s conceptual fashion language. Ownership changed in 2008, when Antichi Pellettieri acquired Mandarina Duck from the Finduck Group. In July 2011, South Korean retail group E-Land signed an agreement to acquire the brand from the Burani Group, marking a shift from Italian to Korean ownership. Mandarina Duck continues to be presented as an Italian fashion brand focused on leather goods and travel accessories, combining innovative materials, functional design, bold color and experimentation in response to changing lifestyles.
