Marciano

Marciano is presented as GUESS’s contemporary retail concept, introduced in 2004 with women’s and men’s fashion collections. It sits within a business established in Los Angeles in 1981 by brothers Georges, Maurice, Armand, and Paul Marciano, whose French background informed its European-meets-California identity. GUESS built its early identity around slim-fitting, stonewashed denim, beginning with the three-zip Marilyn Jean, while distinctive advertising campaigns reinforced its image; Paul Marciano conceived the advertising approach and recognizable campaign style. In 1983, the Marciano brothers sold a half-interest in GUESS to the Nakash brothers, and a 1990 settlement restored full ownership to the Marciano brothers. GUESS became publicly listed in 1996, shifting from a family-controlled private business to a public company while the Marciano family retained substantial influence. The fragrance carrying the Marciano name was Guess by Marciano, a women’s fragrance launched in 2008. In 2019, GUESS introduced GUESS 1981 Los Angeles, a men’s and women’s fragrance pair tied to the brand’s heritage.
